Provides direct services to children and young adults at the Pontiac Free Library. He or she develops, promotes, and implements a variety of literacy-based programs and activities to engage children and teens. Other responsibilities include conducting outreach to daycare facilities and schools in the neighborhood; selects new materials to be added to the children’s and young adult collections; assisting children and teens with use of the library for information and homework; assisting children and teens in selecting appropriate books for borrowing; assisting patrons of all ages with technology and computer use. The Assistant Librarian / Youth Services Specialist also assists with daily operations of the library and may oversee daily routines such as circulation, patron registration, shelving, and other duties as needed. Works under the direction of the Library Director and may act as a supervisor in the Director’s absence.
Bachelor’s degree required. Preference will be given to candidates with or working towards an MLS degree at an accredited school. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to work with the public, familiarity with various technologies and computer programs such as Google Drive, Microsoft Word, and the Internet. Library experience and a minimum of one year working with children preferred.
